Using everyday discards donated by local businesses as a launching pad, reDiscover offers a range of hands-on educational programs and workshops in which items destined for our landfills become reused and “rediscovered” in new, creative ways. Since its founding in 2004, reDiscover has worked with over 24,000 people at its Culver City-based studio/warehouse and in schools and communities across Los Angeles County. Their goal is threefold: to provide youth with new ways to access environmental education through arts-based learning; to assist educators in fostering the innovative thinking necessary for youth to lead and thrive in the 21st century; and, to be a community catalyst for sustainability and the preservation of our planet’s limited resources. Their current strategic plan includes the future development of an exciting full-service facility, dedicated to empowering the reDiscover Center to fulfill our mission at a larger scale. This innovative program, operated by BeeDance LLC, is currently running in 20 markets around North America. Each of their ZeroLandfill project teams assist the local architectural and interior design communities by identifying, diverting from local landfills, and repurposing back into the community thousands of pounds of specification samples that hold value for other audiences, such as artists and educators. So instead of ending up in a landfill or an incinerator, manufacturer samples – such as carpet tiles, wallcovering and fabric samples, ceramic tile and three-ring binders – are collected from participating firms and placed in the hands of local artists, artisans, arts educators and school teachers where they find new life as studio materials and classroom supplies. Since 2006, ZeroLandfill has diverted from the dumpster and returned to the local community over 1,000,000 lbs. of specification materials. Click <a

The organizations are working together to encourage government and industry groups to pass a resolution declaring March 17 – 22 “Zero Waste Week.” As part of this effort, both groups (along with the Northern California Recycling Association) are organizing International Zero Waste Week. The event features a Zero Waste International Dialog, zero waste case studies, and many innovative West Coast leaders in reuse. Liz Long, Bag the Habit co-founder, says “reusability is not just about exchanging one item for another; it is a matter of mindset. It is replacing unnecessarily damaging patterns with those based on wisdom and foresight. It is an awareness that our collective evolution requires personal activism and effort, but ultimately creates greater benefits and enjoyment for all”. In regards to the wider world of reuse, Liz said that she has “been wishing someone would form an organization like the Reuse Alliance. It’s so great to bring everyone around this cause together! We’re excited for Bag the Habit to be a part of it and look forward to working with Reuse Alliance and it’s partners to teach many more people about the importance of reusability.” Click <a

UCB buys used boxes from the largest manufacturers, distributors and retailers in the United States, then inspects, sorts and inventories them to either be resold. They are either sold by the truckload to other large companies or they are used to make UCB’s eco-friendly moving kits for consumers. Through a national network of distribution centers, these moving kits can be delivered to any address in the US, in just 1-2 days, with free shipping on all consumer orders. Marty Metro, the founder and CEO of UCB, is also the newest member of the Reuse Alliance Board of Directors and will be the Master of Ceremonies for ReuseConex. Marty brings an interesting set of life lessons to both Reuse Alliance and ReuseConex. As a former “Big 6″ consultant with an MBA, Metro left the Fortune 500 set in order to balance the need for financial returns with his passion for environmental and social responsibility. In 2002, Metro risked it all to start a chain of eco-friendly used moving box stores, but his attempt was premature, under-capitalized and riddled with logistic flaws. After 3 long years, Metro was forced to cease all operations, leaving him with an empty bank account and $300,000 of personal debt. In less than 1 year, Metro’s relentless entrepreneurial drive lead him to revise the business plan and relaunch a more scalable, tech-centric model to buy and sell millions of used boxes with no retail stores through UCB. This new model has been very successful, and Marty speaks around the country to share his passion for reuse and his message of trial, error, and redemption. style="text-align: center;">The City of Denton, in Texas (COD) is leading the way in sustainability and environmental stewardship through forward thinking, research, and partnerships within the state. Their solid waste department has a green purchasing directive which bans the use of single use containers; so that employees use reusable bags, food, and drink containers. In addition, the COD promotes reuse by giving their citizens reusable bags and containers with reuse-friendly messages printed on them. They also offer a Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) Reuse Store, an award winning program, where residents can get used and/or surplus household chemicals for free. The items on offer, which include fertilizers, paints, and cleaners, are collected through a curbside pickup program. Alana Presley is the Education Coordinator for the COD’s Sustainable Schools Program and an Advisory Board member of SCRAP Denton (a new creative reuse center which is a satellite of SCRAP in Portland).
