Our Story

In 2005, five individuals interested in reuse started meeting to see how they could work together to increase awareness of this activity. These five women, Harriet Taub, Ann Woodward, Nicole Tai, Stefanie Feldman and MaryEllen Etienne, became the founding members of Reuse Alliance.

Shortly thereafter, under the leadership of the founding director, MaryEllen Etienne, the Reuse Alliance became a nonprofit organization and began to encourage others to join their work.  Later that year, the Reuse Alliance officially launched as a reuse network for greater New York metropolitan area with a grant from NY Community Trust Reuse Alliance. For nearly two years the group helped organize the reuse community, advocating for reuse policy, and providing networking opportunities.

After a brief hiatus the founding members of the Reuse Alliance, along with a few others, came together again to re-launch as a national organization in late 2009 and applied for their 501(c)3 designation which was awarded in 2010.

Reuse Alliance started offering services, such as their Master Reuser (TM) Training Program, in the beginning of 2010. Reuse Alliance organized the first-ever national reuse conference and expo (ReuseConex2010) on October 17-20, 2010; which was a great success. Reuse Alliance is in the process of organizing the second national reuse conference and expo (ReuseConex2011) in October 2011.
